Roderick Abbott
Year Of Call: 2006
Roderick has rapidly developed a busy practice since joining Chambers in 2008, following successful completion of his pupillage. He is regularly instructed in both fast and multi-track trials and advises and drafts proceedings in all aspects of Chambers’ work.
He advises and appears in both commercial and residential property matters. Recent work includes a successful two-day trial defence for a local authority tenant alleged to have unlawfully sublet their property, and representing a private residential tenant claiming in relation to her tenancy deposit under the provisions of the Housing Act 2004 (see article in relation to the latter case here: Seeing Treble - Tenancy Deposit Schemes)
Roderick has a particular interest in claims involving the financial services industry. He has been instructed by both claimants and defendants in cases in relation to consumer credit legislation, and is frequently instructed in claims for mis-selling of financial products including payment protection insurance (see recent article on financial advisers’ negligence here: Professional Negligence Briefing - March 2009)
Roderick is Clerk to the Disciplinary Committee of the Council of the Inns of Court, and is involved in regulatory and disciplinary work both for and against regulators. Recent work includes acting as Junior Counsel (led by Alastair Hammerton) for the Bar Standards Board in a four-day prosecution of a barrister for bringing the legal profession into disrepute, and as sole Junior Counsel before the Financial Services and Markets Tribunal in the successful defence of the former managing director of a major insurance broker for alleged complicity in the misuse of client funds. Roderick has also been involved in producing a review of recent developments in regulatory law for the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
Roderick’s practice also covers non contentious and common law work including personal injury, road traffic, highways and credit hire claims. He recently advised on revisions to policy terms for a major public and employers’ liability insurer as part of a team from Chambers.
Roderick came to the Bar with a First Class degree in Modern History from Brasenose College, Oxford. Prior to joining Chambers, he worked in the in-house legal department of a film production and financing company.
